Tick Tock! The clock certainly is ticking in more ways than one in the Year 1 classroom.  With not many days left until the end of the school year, we have been extremely busy trying to cram in as much as we can into our school day.  In maths we have been further exploring time and learning about half past and quarter past the hour.  We have also been learning how to double numbers and half them. Tanat working on doubling and halving numbers. Literacy In literacy as well as continuing with our reading and writing lessons we have also been exploring rhyming words. In this activity the children had to cut out pictures of objects and match the ones that rhymed. UOI After lengthy discussion and reading books on natural environments, the children painted or drew pictures of a natural environment including the features you would expect to find in such an environment and what beautiful pictures they turned out to be! They also began work on ...

Although this has been a very short week,  the Year 1 students have still managed to pack in a lot! Literacy The Year 1 students continued working on their reading and writing skills.  They have come such a long way from the beginning of the year!   Maths This week the children continued working on time, with some students making their clocks.  They also worked on the concept of multiplication, using clay to make candles to put on cakes or fish to put in ponds.  Once they had done this they counted the number of candles or fish, for example 5 candles on 3 cakes equals 15 candles altogether, therefore 3x5=15. UOI The children have begun a new Unit of Inquiry, 'Sharing the Planet'. We began the unit by discussing the word 'Environment'.  After lengthy discussion the children drew different environments, for example a school environment, a city environment etc.

UOI The Unit on Transport is causing a lot of excitement in the Year 1 room.  They so enjoy learning about unusual forms of transport like monorails and hovercrafts.  However, what they enjoy most of all is making their own vehicles. They are extremely inventive using all sorts of materials such as cardboard boxes, plastic bottles etc, to produce some really impressive vehicles. The children also learned about the Wright Brothers and the first aeroplane. Maths This week the children were introduced to fractions, focusing on halves and quarters. They did a really good job of cutting shapes into halves and quarters, especially with the irregular shapes which they then pasted into their books.  The students were also introduced to the concept of time.  They had fun making their own clocks. Literacy We continue to enjoy reading stories in class time, many of which are linked to our UOI.  This week we read 'A Day At The...

UOI Delving deeper into our Unit of Inquiry, the children looked at the history of transport.  They looked at pictures of different forms of transport such as steam trains, 'Penny-farthings', a horse and carriage to name but a few. The children then had a sorting activity where they had to sort pictures of vehicles into the categories of past and present.  They also thoroughly enjoyed painting their own hot air balloons Maths In maths the children worked on consolidating their additions and subtraction skills. They also produced a Venn Diagram to show the differences and similarities between two different forms of transport. Literacy In literacy the children have not only been reading fiction books but also non-fiction.  They have been learning about features such as Contents Page, Glossary and Index.  Many of these books have been related to our UOI. Amelia enjoys some quiet reading time.
