Assembly Fun

Image
Assembly On Thursday Year 1 hosted the assembly.  The theme of the assembly was 'Developing Independence'.  They began by showing pictures of themselves being independent and describing what they were doing, for example brushing their teeth, getting dressed, taking the dog for a walk etc.  They did a great job of speaking clearly and loudly.  They finished their assembly by reciting a poem called 'The Morning Rush'. Maths The children continued to explore number through a variety of activities this week.  Activities ranged from cutting and pasting numbers in order to making their own addition and subtraction sums with dominoes. Birthday Celebrations

UOI Our Unit of Inquiry this week provided us with the opportunity of exploring our sense of hearing.  The children learned that sounds travel in waves and that there are three major parts of the ear. The children then worked on posters to show the importance of our sense of hearing. Junior shows off his 'Hearing' poster/ Prim busy creating her 'hearing' poster. The fact that we celebrated one of the children's birthdays this week reinforced the concept that we are all unique.  A concept which we have  been focusing on in our UOI. Happy Birthday Thun Thun.  Literacy Reading is an extremely complicated process requiring many skills.  One such skill is visual discrimination.  In order to develop this skill, the children have been working on visual discrimination exercises.  Such exercises require the children to choose the correct word for the picture e.g. 'bug' 'big'. Lunar chooses the correct word for...

A Love of Learning! On of our goals here at UDIS is to foster in the children a love of learning.  When children are enjoying what they are doing they are focused and engrossed in the activity.  I have certainly witnessed this in all areas of the curriculum this week. Luffy and and Akin work on the writing books whilst Lunar and Moses enjoying a quiet read. Miss Chen working with the students to match pictures and words Maths In maths this week the children were working on; number recognition,  '1 less than' and '1 more than' as well as basic addition. In the picture below, Luffy and Moses use counters to work out their addition sums. Junior proudly shows off his 'addition' bug. He had to first work out the sum in order to know which colour to colour it. UOI In our Unit of Inquiry this week we have been talking about our homes and families.  We discovered that families, just like our homes come in ...

Number Fun This week one of our number activities was focusing on the order of numbers from 1 to 20.  Each child was given a random number, they then had to sort themselves in order.  They enjoyed this activity immensely.  To further consolidate the order of numbers some of the students completed dot-to-dot activities.                                              Trevi and Thames putting themselves in order. Euro and Prim enjoy making patterns with the beads. Jewoo is very proud of his dot-to-dot dinosaurs. Well done Jewoo. Literacy It is necessary that the children know initial sounds in order to blend these together to make words, as in c a t for cat.  This week the children have been learning these sounds through phonic games, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.  They have also been practising correct letter fo...
