Animals Galore!

Maths

To assess the children's knowledge of the topics covered in mathematics this term, the children were challenged to make a poster entitled 'What I know about numbers'.  I have to say they did an impressive job  and included such things as', odd and even numbers, addition sums and subtraction sums.

Thames shows off his number poster

Torch did a great job with his poster.

Lunar demonstrates on the board the type of thing the children could put in their posters.
Tone uses the chart to help him fill in the missing numbers.

Literacy

Apart from looking at non-fiction books this week, we have also been focusing on understanding what we are reading.  We read a non-fiction text about bats and then we answered questions on the subject.  We also read a non-fiction text on rats, as this is the 'Year of the rat'.  The children then made a poster and wrote some facts they had learned about rats.

The boys fill out the answers to the questions about bats.

Trevi wrote a couple of interesting sentences about rats.

 UOI

As we are learning about Chinese New Year, we invited Miss Chen to come and talk to us about this Celebration.  It was most interesting as we learned about the food aspect associated with the Celebration.
Thanks Miss Chen!
We also learned about the 12 animals in the Zodiac Year and then went on to make some animals of our own.

Torch was very proud of his 'concertina' snake and rightly so!
Who are behind the masks?
Natasha and Luffy.
Lunar sets to work colouring a monkey for the Zodiac Year.

Next Week

Next week the children will begin preparations for their assembly.  It would be most appreciated if you could practise the words of the song 'Celebrations' with your child.

In mathematics the students will be focusing on adding and subtracting one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero (using concrete objects and pictorial representations).

The children will continue to study non-fiction texts with particular emphasis on locating parts of text that give particular information, e.g. titles, contents page and labelled diagram.

In UOI we will be assessing the children's understanding of 'Why people celebrate?'  The children will be interviewing teachers about their experience of celebrations, they will then report their findings to their peers.
