Giants, Jellyfish and Beans.

Mathematics

This week the children have been working on consolidating their  mathematical skills, as well as being introduced to some new activities. As the pictures show, we continued working on Place Value, as well as using geoboards to consolidate our knowledge of 2D shapes.  The children were also stretched by working on individual challenge cards.

Great job Ida!

Tone makes a triangle with rubber bands.

Spy enjoyed making the shapes on his geoboard.

Petch working out the number puzzles.

Thames arranges the numbers in order.

Literacy

This week the children worked on familiarising themselves with basic sight words such as 'the', 'he', 'she' etc.  They read the words and then used them in sentences both orally and in written form. They also filled in missing words in a cloze exercise.
Euro and Natasha write their words in sentences.

Junior filled in the missing words in a cloze exercise.

UOI

In UOI apart from planting our beans we also looked at the life cycle of a jellyfish.  Afterwards the children did some craft work based on the topic and made 'dancing jellyfish'.

Next Week

Next week is International Week, as such the Year 1 students will be focusing on South America.  We shall be looking at the food, art, literature and customs.  To tie in with our UOI we will look at the life cycles of some South American animals and also the Rainforest environment.

Literacy

The focus in literacy will be on South American Folktales.  The children will compare these to traditional familiar stories, for similarities and difference.  To tie in with our bean planting we will also revisit the traditional tale of 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and complete activities such as sequencing story events and comprehension questions based on the story.

Mathematics

In mathematics we shall be looking at measurement.  We will be using non standard units such as handspans and cubes to measure things, such as the 'Giant's footprint', from 'Jack and the Beanstalk.
