Home Learning

What an extraordinary week this has been in more ways than one.  Everyone concerned really has been thrown in at the deep end, however we have all managed to swim.  I am amazed at how well our young students have coped with the online learning.  Well done everyone!  A big thank you to all of those parents who have shared their children's work.

Luffy's Dad actually made a folder on Google Drive and is uploading photos and work Luffy's work to it.  This is great idea as it's a record of Luffy's progress stored in one place.
Spy busy revising his 2D shapes.

Spy online with Miss Rachel

Petch has also been busy working on fractions and drawing vehicles for our transport theme, as well as working on his Fractions and English.  Great job Petch.

To introduce our new unit on Transport, the children listened to the story of Paddington Bear.  Paddington travelled all the way from Peru to London.  The children were asked what forms of transport Paddington may have used.   Torch drew a picture of the  Rapid Train, he thought Paddington had used.  Junior drew a delightful picture of Paddington setting off!  The children also drew pictures of their favourite vehicles.

Love the picture of Paddington in the boat Thames.
Love your car Junior.

Luffy very proud of his vehicle and rightly so Luffy.
Tone did an excellent job drawing his vehicle.

When not busy drawing pictures and writing, the children have been busy working online on various programs.

Thun Thun working on the computer.

The children have also been busy working on Fractions.  We have been learning about halves and quarters.

Thames is learning about time.

Journal Writing

Another way to practise reading and writing with your child is to keep a journal.  Luffy's Dad came up with a fun and novel way to do this.

Luffy has also been keeping fit at home.

Lunar talks about her unicorn.  Loved hearing about it Lunar.

Trevi did a wonderful drawing of Elmer the Elephant after listening to a story about Elmer.

Trevi made a plane for our transport theme.  Wow!  How creative are you Trevi?

Another extremely talented little boy.  Well done Tone!

Euro busy making a poster to prevent bush fires.  Great work Euro.

Jewoo did an amazing job of drawing a lizard and a crocodile.  Well done Jewoo!

Farewell Year 1!

Farewell Year 1! Hard to believe that the end of the school year has arrived, nevertheless it has. I have had such a wonderful time teaching Year 1, I'm only sorry the face to face time was cut short. However in the time we did have together, I got to know the students very well and I have wonderful memories of them. Each of the children has unique talents and personalities, so much so I could write a blog about each one but I shall limit myself to a sentence or two. Natasha Natasha always entered the classroom with a lovely big smile on her face. As such she set the tone for the day.  She helped make the Year 1 classroom a happy place. Thank you Natasha. Luffy Luffy's enthusiasm and excitement for learning is contagious.  Not only is Luffy a great student but also a great teacher.  I learned so many things from you Luffy. Thank you. Torch It wasn't difficult to find a picture of Torch smiling, as he smiles most of the time....

"Books are a uniquely portable magic.”

Literacy "Books are a uniquely portable magic.”  Stephen King It would seem that the children of Year 1 wholeheartedly agree with Mr. King. Linux engrossed in his book. Korwan enjoying a story read by Ms Bom Maths Measurement was the mathematical focus for the week. We focused on what measurement actually was, the type of things we measure and why measurement is important. We then went on to explore the use of informal units to measure, for example paperclips or unifix cubes.  Finally we measured our handspans and used these to measure things in the classroom. Ms Bom helps Linux to measure the metre stick using his handspan. Khung uses his handspan to measure the height of the table. Hugo measures the number balance using his handspan. UOI What a wonderful term to work on the  UOI unit, Celebrations.  We have enjoyed so many celebrations this term including Chinese New Year, children's birthdays and of course this week ...

International Week / UOI For International Week, this week the Year 1 class have been learning about Australia.  This country was chosen as it has some unique animals and therefore seemed to fit in nicely with our UOI, 'All living things go through a process of change'. As a class we looked at some of the marsupials unique to Australia such as the koala and the kangaroo.  We also looked at the life cycle of the kangaroo.  The children were fascinated at the size of the baby kangaroo when it is born. For the Grand Finale, the children recited a poem from the famous children's author, Mem Fox entitled 'I'm Australian Too!.  After the assembly the children enjoyed some yummy Australian food supplied by the wonderful Year 1 parents. Then it was on to a variety of activities. Khung and Chris show off their surfing skills. Khung enjoying some yummy food. 2 cool 'Aussies'. Awa and Nobu Kun work together to colour the ...
