Mathematics
The Year 1 students continued with their investigation into measurement this week, using non-standard units. We discussed why we need different units to measure different objects, for example unifix cubes would not be appropriate to measure the classroom as we would need too many, however we could use cut outs of our actual bodies to measure it. The students were delighted to imagine themselves as measuring tools.

| Petch uses unifix cubes to measure different classroom objects. |
 |
| Moses measure the glue stick using cubes. |
 |
| Natasha work together discussing which objects are shorter and taller. |
 |
| Spy measures the scissors with cubes. |
 |
| The children watch a video about using non-standard units to measure things. |
 |
| Trevi and Akin are very proud of his measuring work. |
Literacy
This week as a class we read 'Fancy Nancy and the boy from Paris'. The children learned some 'fancy' new words such as 'terrified', 'perplexed' and 'tardy'. We also answered comprehension questions on the story.
 |
| Euro cuts out the 'fancy' words to match the 'ordinary' words. |
 |
| Natasha has found a new 'fancy' word. |
 |
| Petch gets all his comprehension answers correct. |
 |
| Lunar reading and writing words from the cards. |
UOI
Thames bringing silkworms to school really helped us understand life cycles and the process of change. We were able to observe, first hand, how the silk worms changed from caterpillars, to chrysalis and ultimately to moths. It was wonderful to see life cycles in action.
We also read 'The Kapok Tree', which explains beautifully the detrimental effect man can have on the environment. The story emphasises the importance of maintaining a balance in nature.
After reading the story, the children chose an animal from the story, to draw and wrote in a speech bubble, why the tree should not be cut down.
Next Week
In Literacy next week, we will revise punctuation such as capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks.
In mathematics we will continue investigating measurement, using handspans to measure height and then display the data in the form of a bar graph.
In UOI we will beginning work on our summative assessment for the unit we have been working on. The children have to demonstrate their learning by illustrating a life cycle of their choice in a medium of their choice. For example, they could make a poster of the life cycle of a butterfly, or show the life cycle of a hedgehog in the form of a diorama. Please feel free to make suggestions or share ideas regarding this project.
Reading stories to your child is not only a great way to foster a love of reading but it also develops oral language and listening skills.
A great resource that we use in class on occasions is 'Storyline'. The site is always adding new books therefore it can be used at home too. Please find the link below. Enjoy!
