UOI

This week we delved further into our space exploration and in particular investigated space shuttles.
After watching a video on making a space shuttle from a plan, Moses did the most amazing job of making one.  I am super impressed Moses!

Is there no end to the talent of the Year 1students?  Totally impressed by Junior, Jewoo and Torch's space shuttles.  Great job boys!

Love the way we get to see the process from start to finish Torch1
Great job!

Junior knows quite a bit about space shuttles.
Impressive Junior!

Wow!  It's nearly as big as you Jewoo!

Loving Luffy's shuttle.  So much concentration and effort Luffy.  I'm super impressed!

No wonder you are looking pleased with yourself Luffy!

Luffy's Shuttle Collection!

Spy is pretty pleased with his space shuttle too.  Good job Spy!

English

In English this week the children read two biographies and answered questions about them.  They also made a postcard from Outer Space.  In the picture below Luffy answers questions about Amelia Earhart.

Simply adore your postcard from Outer Space Luffy
!

What interesting diary entries Luffy.  Keep up the good work!

Maths

In maths this week, the Year 1's did some revision as well as challenge cards, which Junior told me was lots of fun.  That's what I like to hear Junior!

Junior really enjoyed doing the challenge cards.

Junior also thoroughly enjoyed the place value game.

Luffy enjoyed the activity cards too.  Great job boys!

On Thursday the 18th of June, there will be live streaming of our End of Year Show.  Please make sure you mark this in your diaries.  The link will be sent to you next week.

Farewell Year 1!

Farewell Year 1! Hard to believe that the end of the school year has arrived, nevertheless it has. I have had such a wonderful time teaching Year 1, I'm only sorry the face to face time was cut short. However in the time we did have together, I got to know the students very well and I have wonderful memories of them. Each of the children has unique talents and personalities, so much so I could write a blog about each one but I shall limit myself to a sentence or two. Natasha Natasha always entered the classroom with a lovely big smile on her face. As such she set the tone for the day.  She helped make the Year 1 classroom a happy place. Thank you Natasha. Luffy Luffy's enthusiasm and excitement for learning is contagious.  Not only is Luffy a great student but also a great teacher.  I learned so many things from you Luffy. Thank you. Torch It wasn't difficult to find a picture of Torch smiling, as he smiles most of the time....

"Books are a uniquely portable magic.”

Literacy "Books are a uniquely portable magic.”  Stephen King It would seem that the children of Year 1 wholeheartedly agree with Mr. King. Linux engrossed in his book. Korwan enjoying a story read by Ms Bom Maths Measurement was the mathematical focus for the week. We focused on what measurement actually was, the type of things we measure and why measurement is important. We then went on to explore the use of informal units to measure, for example paperclips or unifix cubes.  Finally we measured our handspans and used these to measure things in the classroom. Ms Bom helps Linux to measure the metre stick using his handspan. Khung uses his handspan to measure the height of the table. Hugo measures the number balance using his handspan. UOI What a wonderful term to work on the  UOI unit, Celebrations.  We have enjoyed so many celebrations this term including Chinese New Year, children's birthdays and of course this week ...

International Week / UOI For International Week, this week the Year 1 class have been learning about Australia.  This country was chosen as it has some unique animals and therefore seemed to fit in nicely with our UOI, 'All living things go through a process of change'. As a class we looked at some of the marsupials unique to Australia such as the koala and the kangaroo.  We also looked at the life cycle of the kangaroo.  The children were fascinated at the size of the baby kangaroo when it is born. For the Grand Finale, the children recited a poem from the famous children's author, Mem Fox entitled 'I'm Australian Too!.  After the assembly the children enjoyed some yummy Australian food supplied by the wonderful Year 1 parents. Then it was on to a variety of activities. Khung and Chris show off their surfing skills. Khung enjoying some yummy food. 2 cool 'Aussies'. Awa and Nobu Kun work together to colour the ...
